The Prophet, the servant of God
A prophet is a servant of God appointed by Him to prophesy regularly and have a recognized leadership role among His people (2Chr 20:20, 1Co 14:29, 12:28,29, Eph 4:11). Prophets continuously receive and report God's immediate messages concerning the past, present, or future. They possess a natural and supernatural ability to perceive farther, quicker, clearer, and more specifically than the average believer, and they are compelled to communicate what they perceive (Jer 20:9, Am 3:8, 1Co 14:29). They are much more than just "perceptive", which anyone can be. They are remarkably perceptive in a supernatural way, exceeding the typical keen person. Perception styles vary from prophet to prophet.
From the very beginning of time God has used certain faithful followers to be His prophets. Abel, the fourth human on the earth, was a prophet (Lk 11:50,51). All throughout the Old Testament era God used prophets (Lk 11:50,51). During the first-century church God used prophets (Ac 11:27, 13:1, 1Co 12:28, Eph 4:11). And up until the very end of time He will still be using prophets (Rev 11:3, 18:20, 19:10). True prophets, then, are servants of God appointed by Him to prophesy regularly and have a recognized leadership role among His people.
Contemporary, New Testament prophets are to have a normalcy like anyone else. They do not wear animal-skins, live in the wild, eat bugs, never shave, walk with a staff, smell funny, wear cardboard signs of gloom-n-doom, and talk in King James English--at least they shouldn't. The average person is apprehensive of prophet-types because of such Old Testament personas and present-day religious weirdos. Keep in mind, Jewish prophets ministered within Jewish cultural idiosyncrasies, during an ancient time-period, under Mosaic law, for the ultimate purpose of establishing the Old Testament Scriptures. Also keep in mind, weirdos exist in every area of life, not just the religious and mystical.
Contemporary, New Testament prophets are much different, at least the mature. They minister within a multi-ethnic global culture, during a modernized era, under a grace covenant, and for the ultimate purpose of invigorating the church through Spirit-initiated, situational messages. Today's prophets should be as winsome as a friendly evangelist, warm pastor, or approachable teacher. The validation of a true prophet is not in his or her ability to be weird, hyperjudgmental, alienating, antisocial, or "out there", but rather in the undeniable precision, authority, and God-effect of their words on people.
The burden of the Lord Perhaps the greatest hallmark of a prophet is what Scripture calls "the burden of the Lord". Prophets carry one or more very specific burdens from the Lord. These burdens are weighty concerns preoccupying the Lord's heart, concerns that the prophetic communication addresses and seeks to resolve. These prophetic burdens can last for days, months, or years, until the word accomplishes its purpose, or the concern is resolved, or the Lord discharges that prophet from his communicative responsibility.
The Old Testament Hebrew word for "burden" is massa. It can refer to a physical burden, something carried by an animal (Ex 23:5) or person (Jer 17:21,22). It can refer to a responsibility/stewardship (Num 11:11,17) or emotional preoccupation (2Sam 15:33). It can even refer to a financial obligation (Neh 10:31) or sin (Ps 38:4). Of the sixty-six times massa is used, thirty refer to the burden of the Lord, or a weighty concern God wants addressed and resolved (2Ki 9:25, 1Chr 15:22,22,27, 2Chr 24:27, Pr 30:1, 31:1, Isa 13:1, 14:28, 15:1, 17:1, 19:1, 21:1,11,13, 22:1, 23:1, 30:6, Jer 23:33,33,34,36,36, 38,38,38, Eze 12:10, Nah 1:1, Hab 1:1, Zec 9:1, 12:1, Mal 1:1). Interestingly, the massa can even be communicated in song (1Chr 15:22,27 KJV "song"). Sometimes massa is translated in our English Bibles as "oracle" or "prophecy" or something similar, therefore we can miss the rich "burden" connotation without deeper study.
Though the New Testament does not specifically use the phrase "burden of the Lord", we can deduce it from a few passages. Consider Agabus and the weighty message he carried concerning the severe famine to come. It would affect the entire Roman world and his own church family in Judea (Ac 11:27-30). He traveled all the way from Jerusalem to Antioch to deliver the message. And how about the weighty message he carried about Paul (21:10,11)? Again Agabus traveled from Judea, this time to Caesarea, to deliver the word. We read of Agabus prophesying, but we do not read of his own feelings, reactions, and heaviness in the prophetic process. We can be certain though, Agabus possessed the burden of the Lord in both situations, and I'm sure many others.
Why a burden? Prophets are indispensable to God's program. We need them. We need their disclosure of God's attitude in the moment. They were God's exclusive representatives in the Old Testament (2Pet 3:2), they head up the important ministry lists in the New Testament (1Cor 12:28 and Eph 4:11), they directly engage the evil system of "Babylon" (Rev 18:20), and they declare the gospel testimony of Christ in astutely Spirit-led ways (19:10). Consequently, God must burden and stress the very personality of His prophets with His weighty messages to ensure their delivery. The prophetic burden enables the prophet to override fear and reluctance to speak with superhuman confidence (Jer 20:9, 1:17), to intercede with astonishing results (1:9,10), to push through and surpass all opposition (20:7-13, 1:18,19), and to do whatever is within his capacity to accomplish the burden's initiative (1:9,10). The burden drives him.

2008 is an important year for developing prophets. For, in 2009, many will see their life calling finally beginning to materialize in major ways. The Lord desires that His prophetic friends enter next year with much higher prophetic maturity and credibility. Prophets, we must grow beyond babyhood! The pathetic prophetic must end this year.

Prophecy To My Itchy Ears
All Prophecy Is Given To Build Up, To Encourage, And To Comfort?
Many times there is a confusion that comes forth because many don't realize that there is a difference between the "office of a prophet" and "the gift of prophecy". One is exactly that being a office, with totally different functions, yet the same. The other is a gift of the spirit which Paul addressed in scripture.
The consensus is that all prophecy must be uplifting, encouraging, edifying, and bring comfort to the hearer. Unfortunately that leaves out many other truths according to the scriptures and closes not only the word of God off, but the power of prophecy in many areas and functions.
1Cr 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Lets examine the word exhort.

Now lets examine the word of God within the New Testament.
Act 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, Act 5:2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. Act 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Act 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. Act 5:5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. Act 5:6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
Act 5:7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. Act 5:8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Act 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Act 5:10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
Now that was real encouraging, edifying, comforting and that which was spoken as a prophetic unction built up "Ananias and Sapphira" not to mentioned all the on lookers. Where is the grace, salvation, and the redemption of God in this word and what occurred? Couldn't a few bucks have been overlooked? OK, they lied not only to men, but the Holy Ghost.? Where was the blood of Christ, forgiveness, redemption?
Act 5:11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
Now what is this? Great fear came upon ALL the church as many HEARD (the prophecy, prophetic words) these things.
Since when is FEAR edifying and encouraging? Yet we are not given a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind? Interesting.
Lets examine just a few other scriptures out of hundreds that could be brought to light from the new testament.
Mar 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
Now that is encouraging! It is also prophetic. Yet seconds later it reads.
Mar 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: What?
This is also a prophetic word, and it is not encouraging at all. It is a warning. A very stern warning with major consequences. (Who was speaking here and who were the listeners?)
Lets examine another scripture.
Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: BUT whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Another prophetic word. Now that is very encouraging! Sounds like a warning to me. Sounds like a very stern warning that speaks of consequences. Bottom line “Don't Do It!” and if you have "repent quickly".
Here is a perfect example of what can happen when revelation come to a person from the Father.
Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, BLESSED art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but MY FATHER which is in heaven.
Wow! That is a awesome thing for one to hear the very Lord Jesus Christ say, blessed are you! Now that is encouraging, uplifting, comforting.
Minutes later
Mat 16;23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
"Awe! Those things that be of men".
What is this? Jesus just spoke a blessing over Peter saying thou art blessed, only to within minutes rebuke Peter, call Peter satan, and say thou art a offense to me. Not very encouraging, comforting, or edifying.
The word of God is full of prophecy, prophetic unctions. Some brings joy to the heart. Some are encouraging, some are edifying, lift you up, give you hope. And others are warnings to change course, to examine yourself, to examine your motives, and so on.
Most people fear, and become offended at the word repent, which simply means “hey I love you, change course, your going the wrong way”.
Sometimes prophecy is spoken in quietness, through edification, in encouragement and other times harshly, other times as a rebuke.
Sometimes it is shared through being herald through a writing being made plain on a tablet. Other times it is shared through a dream, a vision, through revelation and through prophetic unctions as simple as one single word. However there is even more....
That doesn’t mean that God stopped loving us or the person called to receive the word. Can you imagine the voice that Jesus used when he said "blessed are you" only to then rebuke Peter and call him satan and a offense minutes later. Picture that scene, and the emotion involved.
One of the most important words in my opinion in the word of God is the word 'if". If you do this, this will happen, if you do that, that will happen.
If you humble yourself God will exalt you, if you are prideful, God will resist you. If you wait on the Lord, the Lord will renew your strength, if you don’t, you will strive and your strength will not be renewed.
If you walk in the spirit, if you walk in the flesh and on and on it goes. These are all prophetic words with different outcomes. Blessings for obedience, curses for disobedience, prophetic words. If you hearken diligently unto the word (voice) of the Lord God all these blessings will come upon thee and overtake thee, if you don’t they will not and other things will come upon you.
Now as I said, the above is just a few examples out of hundreds and hundreds of scriptures.

If you humble yourself God will exalt you, if you are prideful, God will resist you. If you wait on the Lord, the Lord will renew your strength, if you don’t, you will strive and your strength will not be renewed.
If you walk in the spirit, if you walk in the flesh and on and on it goes. These are all prophetic words with different outcomes. Blessings for obedience, curses for disobedience, prophetic words. If you hearken diligently unto the word (voice) of the Lord God all these blessings will come upon thee and overtake thee, if you don’t they will not and other things will come upon you.
Now as I said, the above is just a few examples out of hundreds and hundreds of scriptures.

The Prophets Wilderness
The desert experience, or wilderness, is God's mandatory prerequisite to the prophetic calling. A prophetic person never looks worse than while he/she is in-desert; and, he never looks better than when he emerges as gold, mature in character and ace in prophesying. Even though all Christians experience certain desert seasons, the prophet's wilderness is unique in that it is typically longer in duration and broader in revelatory production.Biblically, the desert is constitutional to prophetic identity. Moses stumbled upon the burning bush and his prophetic calling in the desert (Ex 3:1-10). David blossomed in his desert strongholds, writing many of his psalmic prophecies while there (1Sam 23:14). Elijah, when overcome with despair, ran to a prophetic fetal position--the desert (1Ki 19:3,4). John the Baptist championed the prophet's wilderness, living there in seclusion for extended seasons and even years (Lk 1:80, 3:2). Jesus, the promised Messiah-Prophet, willingly resorted to desert places (NKJV Mk 1:45, Lk 5:16). Though desert places can be dry and wanting, maturing prophets come to find a safety there, a place where their intense and introspective disposition can find relief and equilibrium in God (Ps 55:6-8).

The Hindering Spirit
There's no doubt that we need rules in life to follow. Being accountable to a good thing, is a good thing. Many prefer the word "guidelines" over the word rules. Personally I think rules and guidelines are healthy, good, and honorable.
Even within the church's there are rules. They are also called commandments. Within the structure of any corporation, or government, there are rules, guidelines set forth which again is a good thing.
However when the rules of men, the rule guy, sets forth rules to control others, control the gifts of the spirit, and lord over others and the flock of God. That is not a good, or a God breathed thing. When men desire to stand out, exalt themselves in the eye's of the flock and build ministries for themselves using man made rules over the very scriptures and word of God. That is the flesh, fleshly desires and not a God breathed thing. The end result is "a form of Godliness, but denying the power thereof".
The end result is "a quenching of the spirit of God, the gifts of the spirit, and a dead and powerless church. The end result is that the body suffers.
You see all the rules ever needed with regards to the functioning of the church, and it's members within any given body or congregation are written in the word of God, the very sure foundation of the church. However when we deviate from the word of God, and set up man made rules, we also hinder the very anointing of God from freely flowing.

However there are also a lot of so called prophets and so called prophetic people out there trying to make some money, gather a following and climb the corporate ladder of the church with thier itchy ears prophecies.
So how does one determine if someone is walking in the true office of a prophet, walking as called, and anointed of God? What does the mantle of a prophet look like.
